This story describes a world in which most people have lost the ability to live on the surface of the Earth. Each individual now lives in a standard cellar that meets all physical and mental needs with a universal machine. Travel is allowed, but it is unpopular and almost unnecessary. Communication takes place through a kind of instant messaging / videoconferencing system that allows people to focus on their only activity: sharing ideas and knowledge.
